FOUNDER’S MESSAGE
Begum Bilkees Latif
S.H.E.D.was formed in October 1982, in Bombay, by Begum Bilkees Latif. S.H.E.D. has worked for over 41 years in the Mumbai slums through 5 vocational training centres: Kalina, Dharavi, Andheri, Sagbaugand Jogeshwari When a lady ward visited Dharavi, the largest Asian slum in 1982, she went through a horrifying experience with over ninety of the Dadas and asked what future they planned for their youth apart from their criminal activities. A local goon picked up a stray cat, then twisted its neck, just to frighten the lady ward Every Dharavi street was ruled by a “Dada”.
